In November 2025, our team traveled to Taiwan with a simple goal: to better understand where some of the island’s most respected black teas are made—and whether they truly belong on the BESTLEAFTEA table.
Our journey led us to the Sun Moon Lake region, an area widely known as the heartland of Taiwanese Assam Black Tea production.
Visiting the Heart of Taiwan’s Assam Tea Region
Sun Moon Lake is not only one of Taiwan’s most scenic destinations, but also one of its most important black tea growing regions. The area’s warm climate, high humidity, and clear day–night temperature differences create ideal conditions for Assam tea plants to develop rich flavor without excessive bitterness.
During our visit, we spent time walking through local tea gardens and touring a traditional tea factory. We observed each step of the production process—from withering and rolling to oxidation and drying—guided by experienced tea makers who have worked with Assam tea for decades.
What impressed us most was the attention to consistency and cleanliness. The facility followed strict processing standards, and every batch was carefully monitored to ensure both flavor quality and safety.
Tasting Taiwanese Assam Black Tea at the Source
Of course, the most important moment came at the tasting table.
Freshly brewed, the tea revealed a deep amber-red color. The aroma was warm and inviting, with notes of malt, honey, and grain. On the palate, it was full-bodied yet smooth, offering natural sweetness without sharp edges or harsh bitterness.
Compared to traditional Assam black teas from other regions, this Taiwanese version felt more balanced and approachable—rich enough for black tea lovers, but gentle enough for everyday drinking.
It was clear to us: this was a tea we could confidently enjoy ourselves, cup after cup.
